Shane Lowney - Becoming a Mechanical Engineer

Shane Lowney is a mechanical engineer who is based in Tampa, Florida. He studied at Florida Institute of Technology, where he learned the tricks of the trade, and then moved back to his hometown of Tampa, where he has made a name for himself as one of the most successful names in the field. He has been working in this career for nearly a decade now, and has had the opportunity to work on many exciting projects and even travel abroad for work. Becoming a mechanical engineer is a long and challenging process, but Lowney finds it very rewarding. There are many different types of engineers, but mechanical engineers work to take scientific concepts and ideas and transform them into products and services that can help others and better society. They may work on developing small products or parts for existing machinery, or they may work on large pieces of technology, like spacecraft. Mechanical engineers need to be very versatile and have an appetite for learning, because they work on a big ...

Shane Lowney - The Top Three Reasons to Move to Tampa, Florida

Shane Lowney was born and raised in Tampa, Florida and lives there now with his wife, Christine. He works as a mechanical engineer for a local factory, helping to manage their heavy machinery by ensuring that it is properly operated, up-to-date, and in good repair. He also designs mechanisms for other companies to use in their own operations. He loves Tampa and, unlike many other proud residents of other towns around the United States, wants others to move to his town to see what life is like there. Here are the top three reasons why Lowney recommends living in Tampa: The outdoors. Tampa has lush foliage, complete with palm trees and spectacular beaches. There is also an abundance of rivers, lakes, and whispering streams to dip your feet in when the salty water becomes too much. The weather. Protected by Tampa Bay, the city of Tampa has excellent average temperatures all year. Shane Lowney works with farmers who love the fact that it only freezes a few times a year. A steady Gulf bree...

Shane Lowney - Why Mechanical Engineering?

Shane Lowney knew he wanted to be a mechanical engineer when he was in high school. He was already interested in how things work, especially machines and robots. He was one of those kids who took things apart and tried to put them back together again to find out how they worked. He knew he wanted to design his own devices and machines one day, and he excelled in classes at school like auto shop and engineering design and drawing. Lowney followed his passions and eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2002 so that he could work in the field he felt most accustomed to and talented at.  Shane Lowney encourages young people today to take an interest in mechanical engineering because he says the discipline studies how things work and how our world is put together. Indeed, since the height of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century, machines and robots have become a part of the human experience and the key to producing th...

Shane Lowney - What Skills Are Essential for Mechanical Engineers?

Shane Lowney earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Florida Technology Institute in Melbourne, Florida in 2002 and moved back home to Tampa to work for a local factory as a machine expert. He also designs machines and machine parts for other companies in the area and helps to repair heavy machinery when it breaks down. Over time, Lowney has refined his many skills and built some new ones in his work for several clients around town. When he was studying for his degree, he had to hone some of his natural talents into marketable skills that he could use to get a job after graduation.  Shane Lowney and other mechanical engineers like him have to possess a deep understanding of how machines are designed to work. They have to understand the finer points of engineering in general before they can move on to working with machines in different contexts doing what they are designed to do. Engineers have to be able to look at a design and figure out what a piece of equipment or ot...

Shane Lowney on Flying his Cessna 182

Shane Lowney wanted to a fighter pilot when he was a boy. As he grew up, he had to abandon that dream to attend the Florida Institute of Technology and major in Mechanical Engineering, a profession that allows him the freedom and the stability to buy his own plane and fly. Lowney works for a local engineering firm in Tampa Bay, Florida. He and his wife Catherine live in Tampa and love to take the Cessna out for a spin whenever they can. Lowney is busy in his duties as the project management coordinator for the engineering company for which he works in addition to his freelancing operations as an engineer for various local clients, but he loves to take the Cessna out with his wife whenever possible. The Cessna 182 was originally introduced in 1956. It is the second-most popular Cessna model after only the 180. The model became so popular because of the ease of use and the utility of the aircraft and the improvements that were added after the release of the first models. Shane Lowne...
