Shane Lowney - What Skills Are Essential for Mechanical Engineers?

Shane Lowney earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Florida Technology Institute in Melbourne, Florida in 2002 and moved back home to Tampa to work for a local factory as a machine expert. He also designs machines and machine parts for other companies in the area and helps to repair heavy machinery when it breaks down. Over time, Lowney has refined his many skills and built some new ones in his work for several clients around town. When he was studying for his degree, he had to hone some of his natural talents into marketable skills that he could use to get a job after graduation. 

Shane Lowney and other mechanical engineers like him have to possess a deep understanding of how machines are designed to work. They have to understand the finer points of engineering in general before they can move on to working with machines in different contexts doing what they are designed to do. Engineers have to be able to look at a design and figure out what a piece of equipment or other objects are supposed to do. What work they perform depends on their design and vice versa. Mechanical engineers have to design machines that will complete specific tasks in the most efficient way possible. This involves training in physics and machine design to determine which physical actions are the most efficient uses of energy in its kinetic motion to complete a task. It sounds simple but as Lowney knows, it’s anything but. 

Shane Lowney has built his career on the skills he developed in college and the experience he earned after he started working in his home town of Tampa, Florida. By working in a factory as the head mechanical engineer, he learned many real-world lessons about how machines are operated and how they are maintained. In the laboratories and case studies he has worked on in school, machines are perfectly maintained and operated at all times, creating nearly perfect working conditions. In the real world, people make mistakes, and it’s up to Lowney to help ensure that all of the equipment people rely on to do their jobs are working properly and as smoothly as possible. 

Shane Lowney and mechanical engineers have to work to please the machines that allow people to do their work and with the people themselves. Part of Lowney’s job is to explain how some of the machines in the factory work so that operators can use them properly, avoid injury and keep production chugging along. He has helped ensure that all workers are safe on the floor and even works frequently with safety managers and compliance officers and specialists to ensure that the factory floor is a safe place to be during the operation of heavy machinery.
