There are many different types of engineers, but mechanical engineers work to take scientific concepts and ideas and transform them into products and services that can help others and better society. They may work on developing small products or parts for existing machinery, or they may work on large pieces of technology, like spacecraft. Mechanical engineers need to be very versatile and have an appetite for learning, because they work on a big variety of projects, and their job could be vastly different from month to month. Many companies around the world offer positions for mechanical engineers, such as manufacturers, architectural firms, and research companies, just to name a few.

If you are interested in becoming a mechanical engineer, the first step would be to focus on getting good grades in high school and taking as many science classes as you can to prepare yourself for college coursework. The next step is to find a college with a good mechanical engineering program and get a Bachelor’s of Science. There are many schools around the world that offer this program, so it should not be too difficult to find. Many programs also allow you to get a master’s degree in the subject by staying on for an additional one or two years, which can be a good way to prepare yourself even further.

You may also choose to take on an internship or practical coursework while you are in college. This is a good way to immerse yourself in the practical world of mechanical engineering and network with others in your field. After graduation, the next step you’ll need to take is obtaining an engineering license. You’ll need to pass your initial Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and then study for an additional four years to take your Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to become a professional engineer. You may also want to try to obtain further certification in the field from the governing engineering bodies in your country to further bolster your resume. Once you have completed your degree and exams, you are ready to find a job as an engineer like Shane Lowney.
